Identity card for children under 12 (Kids-ID)

For a Kids-ID (if your child is 6 years old or older), you must book an appointment via our online appointment system

ATTENTION

In line with European regulations, all identity cards issued by EU Member States must now contain the fingerprints of both index fingers.

It is therefore no longer possible to request an eID for children aged 6 or older by post and you will need to make an appointment for one of the parents, accompanied by the child, to go in person to the Consulate General in Montreal in order to record his/her biometric data.

Please note: your child's current Kids-ID remains valid until its expiration date. You do not need to renew it immediately!

Procedure

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Please note that the possession of a Kids-ID is recommended but not compulsory for Belgians living abroad (unlike for Belgians living in Belgium);

Your child's current Kids-ID is still valid until its expiration date: you do not need to renew it immediately!

The parents of any Belgian child under the age of 12 and registered with the Consulate General can apply for a Kids-ID.

A. If your child is under 6 years old

It is not mandatory to come and submit the application in person, nor is it necessary to request an appointment at the Consulate. You can send your application by post. To do so, you will send to the Consulate General in Montreal:

  • The application form in Dutch or in French, duly completed (in black ink) and signed by both parents;
  • A photocopy of the identity card or passport of the parent(s) with whom the child lives;
  • Two recent passport photos that meet the requirements of the FPS Interior (French or Dutch);
  • A recent proof of residence (electricity, gas, water or internet bill, lease contract, Canadian driving licence, etc.);
  • A Postal Money Order or a certified cheque for 15,00 CAD made out to the 'Consulate General of Belgium' (ATTENTION: personal cheques or money transfers are not accepted);
  • A prepaid return envelope (express mail service with tracking number, e.g. Xpresspost regional or national, UPS, FedEx, DHL, Purolator) addressed to the parent(s) with whom the child is living, so that we can send you the new identity card (N.B.: you may also collect it at the Consulate General).

In order to avoid unnecessary delays, please make sure:

  • to choose the first language of the card;
  • to sign (in black ink);
  • if the child is 6 or over: to decide whether you wish to have the certificates immediately or not (see 5 below). If you wish to have the certificates, then you must come and collect the Kids-ID in person to the Consulate General.

B. If your child is 6 years old or over

1. Fill in and sign the appointment form and send it by e-mail together with a photocopy of the identity card or passport of the parent(s) with whom the child to the Consulate General of Belgium in Montreal.

If you are unable to travel to Montreal, alternative options are:

1. Apply for an eID during an upcoming biometric mission of the 'Flying Consul' in your region (see here dates of the next missions

2. Apply for an eID in Belgium at:

  • The Belgian municipality of your last registration;
  • The Belgian municipality of your birth if you have never lived in Belgium but you were born there;
  • The Belgian municipality of your choice if you have never lived in Belgium and were not born there.

Although the price in a Belgian municipality is higher (about 100,00 Euros, varies from one municipality to another), the delivery is nevertheless much faster (maximum 2 working days).
PLEASE NOTE: a Kids-ID application to a Belgian municipality is possible, but only if both parents are present.

How long is a Kids-ID valid for?

A Kids-ID is valid for 3 years, even when you move to a different country or to Belgium.

It is no longer valid:

  • if it was obtained in a municipality in Belgium and you have not reported the child's move abroad to his or her municipal administration.

How much does a Kids-ID cost?

A Kids-ID costs 15,00 CAD (See Consular fees).

How long does it take?

The processing time to obtain a new Kids-ID is around 4 weeks.

Service “Hello Parents”

On the Kids-ID there is a telephone number (+32 78 150350), which can be reached 24/7.

If the child is lost and has his or her Kids-ID, anyone who finds the child can easily contact his or her parents or trusted persons through a cascade system activated by the parents.

To activate this cascade system, please see the following link for more information: www.halloouders.be (Dutch) or www.alloparents.be (French).

Activating the Kids-ID

Any Belgian citizen registered in the registers of the Belgian Consulate in Montreal and having a Belgian child registered in the consular registers can also activate the Kids-ID of his or her child at a consular post or a municipality in Belgium. This operation is only done by appointment which you must book by e-mail or telephone. In the case of Kids-ID, the card can be activated by the parents (or the legal representative) without the child or children being present.

The non-activation of the Kids-ID does not affect its validity and does not prevent you from travelling. Activation is mainly useful for certain administrative procedures in Belgium (post office, bank, health services, websites of Belgian administrations, etc.). If the Kids-ID of your child is not activated, you may, for example, have difficulties making bank transactions, receiving care in a Belgian hospital or buying medicines in a Belgian pharmacy. The activated card also gives access to a whole range of online public services, available on my.belgium.be
